About this course:

Professional jewellers often use wax to cast their jewellery pieces to capture fine details. Learn all the techniques to master wax carving in our comprehensive Online Wax Carving Course. Learn the art of wax carving and create wearable objects and dynamic 3D sculptures in this special series of 8 sessions. You will be guided virtually through hand carving signet rings/dome rings, pendant tops, and flora & fauna jewellery inspired carvings using a range of wax carving tools and waxes. We will provide your very own jewellers wax carving starter kit prior to the first session.


The ONLINE Learning journey:

With real-time online sessions, we prepare you so you can make your own collections in wax from home! The course is composed of 4 introductory sessions focusing to develop wearable pieces (a signet ring & pendant top) and 4 intermediate sessions focusing to develop 3D sculptures (flora & fauna inspired, dynamic animal and floral carvings for fine jewellery). You can sign up for one or both group sessions:


1) INTRODUCTORY WAX CARVING (PENDANT TOP & SIGNET RING/DOME RING)
(4 sessions / 2.5hrs per class)

  • Introduction to wax carving tools and wax

  • Learn basic wax carving techniques including filing, sawing, cutting, and tracing your designs.

  • Work with a range of wax (wax tube, wax block etc)

  • Design and create wearable pieces: pendant top and choice of a signet ring or dome ring.

2) INTERMEDIATE WAX CARVING (DYNAMIC 3D SCULPTURES)
(4 sessions / 2.5hrs per class)

  • Intermediate level

  • Refine existing and learn more complex techniques

  • Learn to apply curving hollow, surface finishing and spatula for wax carving

  • Work with hard wax

  • Design and create 3D sculptural pieces- flora & fauna inspired, dynamic animal and floral carvings for fine jewellery

What tools do I need?

  • A computer

  • A stable internet connection for video conferencing

  • A webcam and microphone

  • HJI Wax Carving Starter Kit - A complete curated wax carving starter tool kit is included with your course fee that contains all the essential wax carving tools and wax that are needed for class, and for you to continue to work independently. We will ship packages internationally, if you are based in Hong Kong, you can pick up the kit directly at our school or at area pick-up points close to your location.

Meet your tutor Ruriko Ito

 

The Course is led by our esteemed HJI instructor and jewellery goldsmith, Ruriko Ito. Internationally recognised, Ruriko has been invited to feature her works in jewellery exhibitions around the world including the JOYA Barcelona Art Jewelry Fair, the SICF Art Show in Japan, the Hong Kong International Jewelry Show, and in MJW (Millan jewellery week). Ruriko continues to teach private and group jewellery making classes at HJI.

No previous experience IS required.

  • Introductory Wax Carving (4 Session) - 1,900HKD + HJI Wax Carving Starter Kit

  • Package: Introductory Wax Carving + Intermediate Wax Carving (8 Sessions) - 3,800HKD + HJI Wax Carving Starter Kit

Additional cost:

  • HJI Wax Carving Starter Kit - 2,000HKD

    The HJI Tool Kit includes a selection of top-grade tools and wax you need for the class and for you to continue to work independently at home. Tool kit includes: various wax tubes, sheets, blocks, bench pin, needle burnished, files, spatula set, emery paper, ring sizer, and a carving heating pen.
